The government is preparing to sell onions it seized from alleged black marketeers in recent marking monitoring in Kathmandu at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kilogram.

The preparation follows reports that black marketeers excessively hiked the price of onions in the market citing export restrictions in India.

Recently, market monitors had seized 120 quintals of onions from vegetable markets in Balkhu and Kalimati. They will be sold by Food Management and Trading Company under the government from Thursday, according to the company’s information officer Sharmila Neupane Subedi.

The onions will be available at the company’s central sale centre in Thapathali.

A meeting of officials from the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection, Kathmandu District Administration Office and the company on Tuesday evening had decided to sell the onions.
